Clara is an app that helps users dedicate time to dating, reflect honestly on their dates, and plan their next steps accordingly. It is the first ever gamified relationship management tool that takes the anxiety and weight out of modern dating.

Dating intentionally

My Role

I worked under the guidance and direction of Sarah Jutras from Huzzah Studio to complete my designs. Though I completed the production work, much of the strategy and consulting was done in meetings with her and The Product Consult. My role included:

  • Wireframing (high-fidelity)

  • Collaboration with development team, company founder, senior designer and product manager.

  • Creation of marketing materials for the app store and for investor presentations.

  • Handing off a final UI kit for future designs.

This project contained both web and iOS designs for Clara (the dating app) and for Clara Open (the matchmaker experience).

Timeline: May 2023-August 2023

Users can record each “prospect”, log their dates and think about how they currently feel about the relationship. The Clara score is a score based on the average rating of their dates.

Logging your dates

We reviewed the date-logging experience and improved upon it. Originally, a user would log their dates, but they would not take the time to write out what they wanted out of a relationship. I changed this by adding the following:

  • In the onboarding experience, we created an intentional dating quiz that they could take before logging their first prospect.

  • After the first 4 dates, they were able to check in and see how the current prospect matched their thoughts on the initial onboarding quiz.

  • We added tabs to the active prospects roster so that users could focus on their best matches, rather than seeing the entire list.

Sharing your Clara Card

The Clara Card enables a user to share their contact information with others that they meet organically. This would give them details on a user’s interests and contact info. I improved upon this design by adding:

  • Sharing of a QR code instead of just a link so that they can more easily share in real time.

  • Ability to save QR to photos so that they can always come back.

  • Contact info at the top to inspire more immediate connection.

  • Making your card open to matchmaker partners

Communicating with others and browsing matchmakers

The next phase of Clara’s development will enable users to communicate directly with matchmakers and potential prospects. I created designs for:

  • Browsing and searching for matchmakers (as shown to the left). Users can see the matchmaker’s overall success rate

  • Created detailed profiles for matchmakers which included reviews.

  • A communications center which enabled users to communicate with prospects and matchmakers.

Matchmaker Experience

Clara Open enables matchmakers to search for prospects that are open to working with one. Matchmakers can search by name, location, profession, for example, to find the ideal matches for their clients. If they find a match, they can elect to interview the potential match.

This feature was one that will be improved upon in future iterations, right now interviewing a match provides an email template, but eventually communication will be able to be done exclusively in the Clara app.

Final Designs

Final designs included a completed UI Kit (examples below) that I updated with my designs, marketing materials for investor presentations, Google Play and the App Store, and finished MVPs for both Clara and Clara Open.

Example of marketing materials that we produced for the Google Play Store and App Store.

“[Clara is] a one-stop shop to make sure I date in the most optimal and efficient way possible... fantastic idea for an app and supremely well executed.”
