AUB Diaries: Graphic Design, Psychology and Cognition

Creating a campaign around a cause that matters to me.

In Graphic Design, Psychology and Cognition, we learned more about the power and characteristics of type. It was interesting to me that even without noticing, different type styles communicate different messages. Even the font I am using for my own portfolio currently, it's whimsical but still has some degree of professionalism to it, similar to my own personality and philosophy around work.

For this course, our final project was centered around creating a campaign for a cause that we are passionate about that fits within the UN sustainability goals and for me I chose a sub-set of promoting LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance. Something that I noticed here in Utah in my studies is 86% support LGBTQ+ rights, but the laws don't reflect that. In a brainstorm with my class, I started thinking about a part that I could look at since the topic of LGBTQ+ rights is so big. I chose to focus on anti-bullying for children, a campaign geared towards and mostly for schools. Utilizing Utah's nickname "the Beehive State," I imagined a campaign that put Utah as more of a "hive for equality" and different schools also considering themselves safe hives. I chose a rainbow palette that complemented two of the Utah flag colors, as well as a lighter shade of blue that complements the Utah flag blue. The main display font I used was a combination of fonts to help still stay readable and inclusive but also a little whimsical and fun.

The safe hive sign above represented a sign that could be placed in a doorway in individual classrooms. In rural parts of Utah that are more conservative, this creates a way for teachers to show that they have a "safe hive" classroom and that they are a safe person to talk to.

Lastly, below I created an events schedule of potential ideas that could take place in school in support of anti-bullying and gay rights. My campaign included more than this - a social media campaign, larger school signage, etc. but being able to work on this campaign was helpful not only in learning about the state of LGBTQ rights in my city and state, but also about the power of type and color to convey a message.
